In autumn’s early breath
We stand with the sun at our backs
We stand with the moon above our heads
We stand with the last green leaves and tender morning fog

The white mist will rise from the bogs and meadows now
Tempting the frost to settle in waiting arms
Pointing fingers at the sky
You will come to me, you will come to me

In late afternoon rose-light shines and mountaintops blaze
The season approaches from the west, like a bandit
Oh, for summer now

But I’ll not fret as the days grow short and night long
As the roots of the forest pull themselves back below ground
As the geese and hawks and finches fly south

I will stand tall amidst the bare naked trees of coming months
Breath deep in the air of now
Let the molecules of tomorrow coalesce upon my brow, unfurrowed and unforgiven…

And, I will welcome the fall
Relish the moment
It is now
Welcome back home

Autumn was only sleeping
