On a northcountry morning with fresh snow on not-yet-green earth
I had lay in state
Waiting for the light of day to say something to my heart
Yesterday’s warmth was gone like a lover’s last kiss to you
And it was as cold as the shadow of Saturn, all things froze out, all thoughts, all feeling
Coated in an early snow, and ice
Rising to scrape my toes across the floor, once more, a labor, a daily deal with the devil
Soon enough the sun will rise again
over the northcountry, the glacial valleys and left behind boulders and high peaks with gray jays yammering and calling
Repeat and repeat and repeat the game
Maybe you can steal a base, and slide into second
Maybe
I stopped along the road, window still frozen over to clear my vision, but not my heart
It still lay in state
On a northcountry morning with fresh snow on not-yet-green earth
